Instructions for Creating an Online Account

1. Using your internet browser, type moodle.otan.us in the address bar.
2. Choose Martinez Adult Education in the Course Categories window at the center of the screen.
3. Select Beginning Excel in the Courses window.
4. Select [Create a New Account] in the "Is this your first time here?" section.
5. Fill out the New Account form with your details.
6. An email will be immediately sent to your email address.
7. Read your email, and click on the web link it contains.
8. Your account will be confirmed and you will be logged in.
9. Verify you are in the Beginning Excel course website.  If not, select the course from the Courses window.
10. If you are prompted for an "enrollment key"-use the one that was given to you when you registered for the class.  This will "enroll" you in the course.
11. You can now access the full course.  From now on you will only need to enter your personal username and password to log in and access any course you have enrolled in.

Course Outline & Syllabus

Purpose of the class:

To teach the adult student basic Microsoft Excel for Windows and apply their learned skills to employment and personal needs. To acquaint the student with beginning spreadsheet applications and enable the student to take advantage of the many capabilities of an electronic spreadsheet.

Performance objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
• View, edit and print worksheets
• Create simple worksheet structures
• Use formulas and functions
• Format cell contents
• Modify worksheet structure
• Create and format charts
• Analyze data using formulas
• Manage workbooks and large worksheets

Instructional strategies:

Students will read textbook, satisfactorily complete hands-on exercises, chapter review questions, and skills assessments as indicated in text and syllabus provided by instructor, correct all assignments as directed, and successfully complete a final skills assessment. Students will receive assistance from instructor via online communication as necessary but will be expected to complete the majority of their assignments without step-by-step instruction.

Syllabus:

For this course, we will be using the text, Microsoftฎ Office Excelฎ 2007, Illustrated Series. The screenshots in this book show Microsoft Office 2007 running on Windows Vistaฎ. For Windows XP users, read pgs. xxii-xxiii before beginning in the book. We will be covering Units A through F and examining the material through step by step direction, concepts review questions, and practice assessments found at the end of each unit.

For concepts review questions, click the appropriate link in the topic group you are currently working on. Submit other assignments via Excel file using the example:  Unit_, “Filename”, Student Last Name.

You will be required to complete all assignments in one unit per week, at minimum. Each unit uses data files which can be easily downloaded to your computer or removable storage by following the directions on pg. xxiv. You are not required to print any documents for this course. When directed to print, select print preview to view your assignment in printed form. Any incorrect/incomplete assignments must be resubmitted with corrections as directed by instructor. There will be a final open-book project which will be open for you to complete during the last week of the course. You will have two weeks to correctly complete this assignment. Any corrections will be handled in the same way as previous assignments.
